Waving from the 90s
Throwback Alpini Trail
Fond memories of a week in Sexten, South Tyrol, a long time ago.
Cut into the Dolomites as a supply route during the so-called “White War” over a century ago, the Alpini trail remains both reminder and everlasting scar on the mountain face.
Since then, it has served as a high-altitude hiking path, letting anyone immerse themselves in the mountainscape and be awed by stunning vistas.
The worst weather makes for the best memories
My late dad looking effortlessly cool in white overalls. Not recommended if you get lost, but sometimes style beats safety.
At least Greg was highly visible with his posh orange jeans, Chevignon, when I remember correctly. This French brand was massively popular in Berlin in the 90s.
All clad in the baggy garments of era; oversized pop-overs, my beloved Benetton school backpack, ball caps and bandanas. We didn't shop any gear; we just packed the most outdoorsy-looking stuff from our wardrobes.
Abwettern
The German term that means to weather out the storm
When you’re not prepared, you just ride it out. My brother Felix, I and our friend Greg in his disposable rain jacket.
I always found that the worst weather makes for the best memories. Consecutive days of blissful sun feel wonderful in the moment, but in hindsight they blur into a warm and fuzzy memory mass. Whereas a thunderstorm or a torrential rain marks a moment and makes it stand out when we look back on days gone by.
